She was referred to as “the human computer” often hand calculating equations to match those of the computer. Afterwards, she dropped the program and began working af naca, which later became nasa. She was always good at math, getting a degree in math and french before being hand selected to be one of the 3 African American studnets to attend the newly integrated west Virginia state. She verified the calculations and John Glenn made history becoming the first U.S. John Glenn depended on Katherine Johnson to verify that the computer calculations were correct. In 1961, she calculated the path for Freedom 7, the spacecraft that put the first U.S. ![]() Johnson’s mathematical genius was instrumental in NASA’s Mercury program (1961-1963). She authored and coauthored 26 research reports in her career. In 1960, Johnson was a member of the Space Task Force and coauthored a paper with one of the engineers about calculations to put a spacecraft into orbit. However, in 1958, NACA became part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which banned segregation. The African Americans had to use separate bathrooms and ate in separate dining facilities. The working conditions were not easy for Katherine and her friends. She was with a group of African American women who were in the computing unit and manually performed complex mathematical computations for the program’s engineers. Katherine began working at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), in 1953. However, she decided to marry James Goble and start her family. She and three other African American students enrolled in the university for graduate courses. She decided to take a teaching job in Virginia. She received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and French. ![]() ![]() She graduated from West Virginia State College (now West Virginia State University) when she was 18 years old.
